Expression lines: why they appear and how to soften them
Expression lines are one of the first signs of time that people notice, and also one of the most misunderstood. They appear on the forehead, between the eyebrows and around the eyes, and often start to bother people not out of vanity, but because they give a tired or frowning look that does not match how the person actually feels.
Why they appear
Expression lines have a name that explains almost everything: they come from expression, that is, from the repeated movement of the facial muscles.
Every time we frown, squint or raise our eyebrows, the skin folds. When we are young, the skin springs back without leaving a mark. Over time, and with the natural loss of collagen and elasticity, those folds start to set. First they only show with movement, then they become visible at rest as well.
The most common areas are:
- The forehead, with its horizontal lines
- The space between the eyebrows, the frown lines
- The corners of the eyes, the well-known crow’s feet
Expression lines are not the same as sagging lines
It is worth telling them apart, because the treatment is different.
Expression lines come from muscle movement. Lines linked to loss of firmness and volume have a different origin, connected to sagging and skin structure. They often coexist, which is exactly why assessment matters: treating the wrong line with the wrong approach rarely gives a good result.
How they are softened
The best-known approach for expression lines is botulinum toxin. Put simply, it relaxes the muscle responsible for the line in a controlled way, which softens the line and stops it from deepening.
The central point, and where technique makes all the difference, is the dose. The goal is not to block movement completely, it is to relax just enough for the face to stay expressive. Done well, the result is subtle: the person looks rested, not frozen.
When the lines are already set at rest, it can make sense to combine this with other approaches that work on skin quality. That is decided in consultation.
Prevention counts too
A common question is whether it is worth starting early. There is no single answer, but there is a logic: the longer a movement line keeps creasing, the more it tends to set at rest.
For that reason, some people choose a preventive approach, while the lines still only appear with expression. It is not about doing more, it is about doing it at the right time. It is a personal decision, and one that should always be guided by a medical assessment.
Beyond treatments, two habits help a lot to delay expression lines: daily sun protection and a good skin hydration routine.
In short
Expression lines come from the repeated movement of the facial muscles and set in with the natural loss of collagen. They can be softened in a natural way, especially when the treatment respects each person’s expression instead of erasing it.
If expression lines give you a more tired look than you would like, book an assessment consultation. We will look together at what makes sense in your case, with naturalness as the priority.
Everything you need to know
Not when it is done well. The goal is to relax the muscle just enough to keep a natural expression. A good result shows as a more rested face, not a still one.
There is no fixed age. Some people start earlier, as prevention, when the lines only show with movement. Others prefer to wait. What matters most is an individual assessment.
